32415 Archdale – Lush, Luxe, and Lovely
Roadside plantings of hardy amaryllis hint at the resplendent surprises in store. A wide flat driveway sweeps through the “certified wildlife habitat” approach to this hidden estate. Jerusalem artichoke and native rhododendron enliven our approach. The owners, avid collectors (one a master gardener), relish choosing trees, plants, and artwork, siting them to exquisite advantage. At every turn there are sumptuous pleasures.
When the facade comes into view, we are captured by the enormous cascading pink roses flanking a small graceful conservatory. Beckoned into the side garden through an arbor abounding with Japanese hydrangea, an array of azaleas, ferns, and camellias delights us. The dappled light reveals a serene setting watched over by “Destiny”, a graceful bronze sculpture. The infinity-edge pool, Buddha, deodar cedar ‘Feeling Blue’, and potted Japanese maple create a Zen atmosphere. Parsley and sage surround the spa, sustaining caterpillars now and pollinators later. Artwork enhances every vista. Carefully selected plants flourish with expert care: plate-sized Clematis, immense hellebores, iris, and topiary hydrangea. Mounting the stairs we are treated to a bird’s-eye-view of the lower garden’s stunning blue-violet mazus-lined path leading to the play area and whimsical Flat Stanley. Level with the tree canopy, we survey the expansive panorama. There are too many notable specimen plants to list them all but don’t miss the Golden Chain tree, Fringe trees (Chinese and natives), Cornus alternifolia ‘Golden Shadows’, and Cestrum ‘Orange Peel’. This property showcases 143 azaleas, 53 rhododendrons, and 19 camellias, assuring springtime bloom. Its easy elegance has been passionately and thoughtfully curated.
