It’s For the Birds at the Historic Bennett Farm
Enter a garden born in simpler times. The unassuming approach gives little hint of the delights beyond the garden entrance. If in bloom, Miss Kim lilacs perfume your entry into the series of garden “rooms” wrapping the restored farmhouse. Note the rhododendron thought to be original to the house. A collection of architectural accents offers support and sculptural backdrop throughout the garden. The charming Chippendale bridge invites further exploration.
The current owners purchased the home in 2014. They enjoy the vignettes creating beautiful compositions from any window of the house. The wide porch recalls the past with its relaxing rocking chairs and swing. A garden shed anchoring the fenced garden was a smokehouse that was moved from a nearby property. Birds and the owners’ children relish a small pool surrounded by culinary herbs. Perhaps the birds are scouting the quirky birdhouse collection, choosing a future home. The narrow herringbone brick path leads from the arbor gate to the driveway and back to modern time.

The historic garden was created by Art and Gus St. John and largely designed by Suzanne Edney.
