Superb Contemporary Design on a Steep, Forested Slope
Stunning architectural and functional design have fashioned a modern garden that achieves the owners’ objectives of more entertainment space outdoors, better drainage, and protection of the surrounding oak forest and steep slopes.
The clean hardscape structures float you through the terraced garden into the woods, which is filled with abundant bird life and rhododendron. The embrace of the private enclosure, soothing sounds of birdsong and the garden’s simple, elegant water feature create a mood of serenity. Fragrant plantings and a river rock dry stream enhance the small, private side patio. The Japanese maple close to the deck has a special significance. It was transplanted from the home’s original garden, where the owners were married ten years ago.
NC Opera will perform selections in this garden.
In 2012, Mike Ackerman of Blue Sky Landscaping redesigned the garden with beautifully angled retaining walls, fence, and ipe deck with concealed fasteners. Matt Meashey of Sierra Structures built the fence and deck. The recent redesign of the front beds, new retaining wall and walkway is credited to Raleigh’s Daniel John of Landvision Designs. Personalized Landscaping helps the owners maintain the garden.
