Altruistic Gardening
An air of permanence and professionalism makes an immediate impression. Ample raised beds within concrete slabs and sturdy bamboo supports for peas and beans indicate the level of support both for the food crops and access to healthy food. Hoops for plastic and cold frames give plants begun in early spring a head start and extend their growing seasons. The garden also features fruit trees and capacious compost bins which accommodate community donations.
Carolina Campus Community Garden (CCCG) is a UNC-Chapel Hill project that utilizes volunteer support to provide UNC housekeepers with free fresh, local, sustainably-grown produce. The garden connects students, community members and UNC employees with advanced and beginning gardeners alike. It serves as a cooperative educational vehicle for developing gardening skills, healthy living, social responsibility, and community. This garden has accessible pathways and its raised beds make it convenient to garden for people in wheel chairs or with bad backs or knees.
